Big News: £9,000 Heat Pump Grants for Off-Gas Homes – What It Means for homeowners in South West Wales

The UK government has just announced one of the most important updates to the Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS) since it launched — and it’s especially good news if you’re off the gas grid.

If your home currently uses oil or LPG, from July 2026 you could receive up to £9,000 towards a heat pump installation.

Here’s what’s changed, who it applies to, and how it works in practice.

What’s Changed: The £9,000 Off-Gas Uplift

Previously, the Boiler Upgrade Scheme offered:

  • £7,500 for air source heat pumps

  • £7,500 for ground source heat pumps

Now, the government has increased this to £9,000 for homes heated by oil or LPG.

Why this matters

This is targeted at:

  • Rural homes

  • Off-grid properties

  • Homes exposed to volatile fuel prices

Oil and LPG households have been hit hardest by price spikes, so this uplift is designed to:

  • Reduce reliance on expensive fuels

  • Provide more predictable running costs

  • Accelerate the switch to electric heating

In simple terms: If you’re off the gas grid, and reliant on oil or LPG, this is now the best time to switch to a heat pump.

Key dates:

This grant is as only available for a limited time.

  • from July 2026

  • until the end of the Financial year in March 2027.

Who Is Eligible?

The Boiler Upgrade Scheme is open to homeowners and small property owners in Wales and England.

To qualify, you must:

  • Own the property (including landlords and second homes)

  • Be replacing a fossil fuel system (gas, oil, LPG, or electric)

  • Use an MCS-certified installer (like Limitless Energy)

  • Install a system that fully heats the home (no hybrids)

The grant is:

  • Applied upfront as a discount (that means there's no need to wait for credit back - you just pay installation costs not covered by the £9,000 grant).

  • Managed by the installer (we handle the process)

  • Limited to one grant per property

Why Off-Gas Homes Benefit the Most

If your property is:

  • On oil

  • On LPG

  • In a rural or semi-rural area

You are now in the strongest position financially.

Example:

  • Typical air source heat pump grant for properties with mains gas: £7,500

  • Off-gas uplift: £9,000

That’s a significant reduction in upfront cost — often making heat pumps cost-competitive with replacing a boiler.

What About Self-Build Projects?

Good news — self-build properties are still eligible under the scheme.

However, there are some key rules:

Eligible if:

  • The home is a genuine self-build (not developer-built)

  • You (the owner) were involved in construction

  • The heat pump is installed after completion

Not eligible if:

  • It’s a standard new-build from a developer

  • The system is installed before the home is officially completed

Self-builders can still claim:

  • £7,500 (standard)

  • Or £9,000 if the property is off-gas (oil/LPG)

This makes heat pumps one of the most cost-effective heating solutions for new self-build homes, especially when paired with:

  • Underfloor heating

  • Good insulation

  • MVHR systems

When Does the £9,000 Grant Start?

  • Announced: April 2026

  • Expected rollout: from July 2026 (phased implementation)

  • Anticipate for one financial year only (that means it is scheduled to finish in March 2027)

The Boiler Upgrade scheme itself:

  • Runs until at least 2028

  • Has increasing government backing and funding to £400m

This planned uplift is separate to other BUS scheme changes currently being rolled out by OFGEM from 1st April. Current guidance on requirement is here:

Key Things Homeowners Should Know

Before applying, it’s important to understand:

  • The grant does not cover the full cost

  • Your home must be suitable for a heat pump

  • Insulation and system design are critical

  • Installations must meet strict performance standards

This is not a “like-for-like boiler swap” — it’s a system upgrade

Our Take (From an Installer Perspective)

This £9,000 uplift is a big deal.

It clearly signals:

  • A strong push toward electrification

  • A focus on off-gas homes first

  • Continued long-term support for heat pumps

For homeowners:👉 It’s the most generous support we’ve seen so far since the Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI).

For self-builders:👉 It makes heat pumps the obvious choice and future proofs your new home away from volatile oil and gas prices.

For off-grid properties:👉 It removes one of the biggest barriers — upfront cost.

Thinking About Switching?
