How a Retired Couple in Llantwit Major Future-Proofed Their Home for Comfort and Energy Independence with Solar & Heat Pump

A recently retired couple undertook a major renovation of their substantial family home in Llantwit Major. But this wasn’t just about modernising the look — it was about future-proofing. With a strong focus on clean energy, reliability, and comfort, the family wanted a home that could keep pace with their lifestyle and values.

Already owners of an electric vehicle, and having previously experienced the benefits of a heat pump, they were keen to return to clean, efficient heating — but with better integration, storage, and energy independence this time around.

What We Installed

After an in-depth consultation with the family, we designed and delivered a complete energy and heating upgrade tailored to their needs:

Tesla Powerwall 3 with Gateway

Installed neatly in the garage, the Tesla Powerwall 3 provides robust battery storage and full-home backup thanks to the integrated Gateway. In the event of a grid outage, the system kicks in automatically — keeping lights, heating, and key appliances running without interruption.

11kW Solar PV – East/West Split

To power the system, we fitted an 11kW solar PV array across the east and west-facing roof slopes of their home. This split configuration means they capture generation throughout the entire day — from early morning to late evening — significantly increasing self-consumption and battery charging.

8.5kW Mitsubishi Ecodan Heat Pump

For heating and hot water, we installed a Mitsubishi Ecodan 8.5kW heat pump, which connects to the home's existing underfloor heating both upstairs and down. The Ecodan is an ideal choice for retrofits like this, offering reliable, efficient, and quiet performance — a big upgrade from the family’s earlier system.

And, as we replaced a fossil fuel system the homeowners were eligible for the £7,500 grant through the Boiler Upgrade Scheme to support the installation costs.

250L Hot Water Cylinder

We also installed a 250-litre unvented hot water cylinder, ensuring the household always has a generous supply of hot water, even with multiple bathrooms and high family demand.

The End Result

Thanks to a carefully designed combination of solar, storage, and heat pump technology, this retired couple now enjoy:

  • Reliable, zero-carbon heating

  • Protection from energy price rises and power cuts

  • Optimised use of solar generation

  • Smart integration of home energy systems

  • Long-term peace of mind

This project shows what’s possible when you combine modern energy systems with thoughtful renovation — creating a home that’s cleaner, smarter, and ready for the future.
