How We Brought a Traditional Gower Farmhouse into the 21st Century with Heat Pumps, Solar & Battery Storage

When we first visited this stunning solid stone farmhouse on the Gower Peninsula, we knew it had character in spades—but it also had a big problem: keeping up with the heating and hot water demands for this large family home. With an oil boiler here and an LPG boiler there, efficiency was low, bills were high, and carbon emissions were too.
Our challenge? Upgrade the property without compromising its charm, while making it comfortable, sustainable, and future-ready.

Heat Pumps to Keep Everyone Warm
The solution started with a cascade heat pump system: two 11kW Mitsubishi R32 heat pumps, paired with 400 litres of hot water and two buffer tanks. Now, the whole house can enjoy reliable heating, no matter how chilly it gets outside.
And because we replaced the old oil and LPG boilers, the homeowners were able to save money by claiming £7,500 through the Boiler Upgrade Scheme, making the upgrade more affordable. All the heavy kit lives in a purpose-built plant room, while the pipework runs discreetly in a trench beneath the driveway. Clean, tidy, and out of sight.

Solar Without Compromising Character
Next up: solar. With large slate roofs across the farmhouse, there was plenty of space to capture the sun. We installed 10.5kW of solar PV, paired with a 10kW inverter, to generate plenty of electricity for the home.
One thing the homeowners were clear on: no visible wires on their exposed ceilings. So we carefully planned all the DC runs so they’re completely hidden—perfect for maintaining the aesthetic of this traditional home.

Battery Storage for Control and Resilience
To make the most of their solar, we installed a 17kW GivEnergy battery. This means excess energy can be stored for later, lowering bills. Plus, the homeowners can check and control their heat pump, solar, and battery remotely, giving peace of mind even when they’re away.
The Result
The farmhouse is now warm, comfortable, and future-proofed. Solar, battery, and heat pump work together seamlessly, keeping energy bills down and carbon emissions low—all while preserving the home’s timeless charm.
For the homeowners, it’s about efficiency without compromise, comfort for all, and knowing their home is ready for whatever the future brings.
