What Is the Boiler Upgrade Scheme?

The Boiler Upgrade Scheme is a UK government grant designed to help property owners replace fossil-fuel heating systems (such as gas, oil, or LPG boilers) with low-carbon alternatives like air source or ground source heat pumps.


The grant values are:

  • £7,500 towards an air source or ground source heat pump

  • £5,000 towards a biomass boiler (for rural, off-gas properties only)

This funding is part of the government’s wider plan to reduce carbon emissions and promote sustainable home heating.


Who is Eligible for the grant?

The Boiler Upgrade Scheme is available to:

  • Homeowners, self-builders, and small business owners in Wales or England

  • Properties replacing an existing fossil-fuel heating system

  • Buildings with a valid Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) 

  • Self-build properties, provided you can show evidence of self-financing and ownership

Please note that social housing and most new-build developments are not eligible for the scheme (self-builds are the exception).


Step by Step - Accessing Your Grant

  1. Initial Consultation & Assessment: We’ll assess your property or design plans to confirm suitability for a heat pump and ensure your project meets the BUS criteria. (I.e. that you are replacing a fossil fuel system, have a valid EPC, or that you are a self-build project).

  2. Quotation & System Design: Our team will design the most efficient heat pump system for your home or business. The grant value will be clearly deducted from your total installation cost and this is shown upfront on the paperwork.

  3. Application Submission: We take care of the grant application on your behalf. The Boiler Upgrade Scheme is installer-led, meaning only an MCS-certified installer (like Limitless Energy) can apply.

  4. Ofgem Confirmation: You’ll receive an email from Ofgem to confirm that we’re applying on your behalf. Once you approve, and once they have confirmed your identity via the Experion check process, the voucher is issued to us.

  5. Installation & Commissioning: Our engineers install and commission your heat pump system to the highest standard. Once complete, we redeem the grant directly from Ofgem — you pay only the remaining balance. Often, a balance is returned to you.
